Picture of LeoI am a senior research scientist in the Probabilistic and Statistical Inference (PSI) Group (or Frey Lab), which is housed in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and afflicated with the Department of Computer Science, Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolucular Research and Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence. I am responsible for leading/supporting reseach projects in computational biology and machine learning, recruiting/advising undergraduate and graduate students and general lab management. Please see the group publications page for the projects that I have worked on. I also consult for Deep Genomics and BGI.

Previously, I was an NSERC postdoctoral fellow in the same lab, collaborating closely with Benjamin Blencowe's and Timothy Hughes' labs at the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research. I did my PhD in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at University of Waterloo with Paul Fieguth, during which I have also worked at Microsoft Research with Li Deng and Hagai Attias. My thesis was mainly on statistical speech processing and related machine learning techniques.
